    [I Am Awake]

[I Am Awake] is 70 track, 60 minute mix performed by recording artist R.D. Peoples. The purpose of this effort wasn’t to create a mindless mash up of sounds; but to create a massive mix that could be played over and over again. It is heavily layered, complex, and showcases almost all sub-genres of Drum and Bass.

R.D. Peoples has said the inspiration of this effort came about after hearing Dieselboy’s 87 track, 90 minute set ‘Wake the Dead’ back in October of last year. He thus themed and named the set to reflect its inspiration.

This massive mix features many of today’s top-level Drum and Bass producers, and several producers that would be considered by many to be ‘unknown’. [I Am Awake] completely stole the show when it was performed, and it will take any fan of Drum and Bass on one of the most dynamic and emotional listening experiences available today.

The artwork features ‘Serenity’ star Summer Lau; who joins Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, and Natalie Portman in the Famous Female Cover Artworks of R.D. Peoples mixes.

  • I Am Awake Artwork featuring Summer Lau

    I Am Awake – Drum n Bass

When R.D. Peoples recorded/performed his ‘I Am Awake’ set, nobody really knew what was actually happening. The Hip Hop/EDM artist kept his intentions to himself, and had recently become heavily inspired to push the boundaries of what he was previously known to be capable of in his performances. He has a hunger for self-improvement that is seemingly never satisfied; and it is reflected every time he performs or releases new material.

As most of you know by now; ‘I Am Awake’ is 72 track- 64 minute Drum n’ Bass/Electronica Extravaganza of a live set; filled with a laundry list of the industry’s current top producers, and some very ‘unknown’ producers as well. It includes so many layers and sound variations; that it seems to be longer than what it actually is. It’s not just a mash-up of top tracks, either (thankfully). R.D. takes his time at the appropriate moments within the set, and purists will (and do) love the fact that effects are used less than 5 times throughout its entirety.

One thing that most are unaware of however, is the reasoning behind this tremendous effort.

“I’ve been listening to Dieselboy since he released ‘the Sixth Session’, and I’ve attended several of his performances. In regards to Drum n Bass, he has always been a big influence on the kind of sound I wanted to provide to audiences. For the past couple years though – up until October of last year (2012); I really didn’t hear much from him. At random I decided to search new material from him, and that’s when I came across his ‘Wake the Dead’ mix. It ‘woke’ me up (laughs). It kind of shook me to the core creatively. Up until then I felt as if I was doing great with my mixing; but I wasn’t…I wasn’t great. All of a sudden every set I had released became a disappointment; an embarrassment. I’m kind of harsh on myself; but that’s the only way I can better myself. I became inspired by the flow and layering of the mix. Tracks weren’t just being played, new ones were being created; at least in my ears. The same goes for a guy named Laidback Luke. I actually never heard of him until I stumbled across his DjSounds live radio performance. I found what he was doing to be sheer genius. He is mad creative with his mixes. I’ve been a huge fan of his ever since. Essentially; ‘I Am Awake’ happened because of Laidback Luke and Dieselboy. I like to think of it as a sort of response to ‘Wake the Dead’. In comparison; I was dead. Just sayin…I am now awake.”

    Analysis:

Given the amount of time he has been performing in front of larger crowds and how large this crowd actually was (over 2,600), R.D. Peoples took a huge risk in something going wrong in the set, but he has obviously been refining his skills-as this release is head shoulders above anything he has ever done within EDM. It is more than likely that ‘I Am Awake’ will push his EDM notoriety and expand his audience much further than Monster Mansion Music and even Boogie of Babydoll. They pale in comparison on every level, and this is seemingly perfect timing for him to pull something off of this magnitude. Not to take away from his talent; but many will find ‘I Am Awake’ as a welcome surprise from him.

  • R.D.P. No Kawaii!!!

R.D. Peoples will have to sit out Kawaii-Kon this year. Rumors of the artist not  only attending but performing at the annual convention have been squashed. Though the opportunity did come through, the musical cosplayer had already been slated for the last stop for his ‘We Are Everything’ tour…SXSW in Austin, Texas.

The actual date and time slot for the Austin show is still in TBA status, which meant Peoples had to defer to appearing in Hawaii the same week.

“I really would have preferred finding a way to make both of these events work out, but I can’t be bummed for losing a great opportunity in exchange for a great opportunity. Maybe next year.”

Analysis: He may come across as apathetic to the situation; but there is no doubt that the turn out in Hawaii would’ve been significantly larger for him than what will be waiting for him in Texas, and he must be aware of that. R.D. Peoples’ core fan-base is the type that would attend an Anime or Comic book convention over a music convention. He had a surprisingly large impact at Comic Con 2012. That said; it’s still expected he will have a strong following for his Austin show.
